Rebecca watched as Will got in, buckled his belt and fired up the engine. Then he didn’t move, just gazed straight ahead at the garage door. His big body looked tense, his expression brooding.
“What do you think?” she asked finally, bracing herself for a critique.
A storm brewed in eyes that had never looked darker. “I think he’s as crazy as anyone I’ve ever met. He was trying to play us, but he couldn’t keep it together when he thought you weren’t convinced…or when you dented his ego.”
Thankful he wasn’t dismissing her impression of Tim, she said, “I noticed that. Odd duck is one way to describe him.”
“I’d have said sociopath.”
“We don’t know.” She could just see around the corner of the garage to a slice of the front window. Was Tim wondering why they hadn’t left? “He could just be mad because we seem to doubt how much he cares about Mandy.”
Will grunted. “He’s obsessed with you.”
A shiver traveled down her spine. “He might have a…a crush on me. Older woman he thinks is sexy.”
“Don’t take this lightly,” Will growled. “It isn’t that Torgerson woman he’s thinking about. It’s you. And he was off yesterday.”
Rebecca gripped the seatbelt, hoping he couldn’t see how tightly. “He drives a Jeep, and I’m sure that was a car behind me.”
Powerful and intensely male, Will’s hands flexed on the steering wheel, drawing her unwilling attention.
“What do you want to bet he has access to at least one of his parents’ vehicles?”
Parents’ vehicles. It took her a second to think about what he’d just said. “Did you see the concrete pad on the side of the house? It’s covered.”
“RV.”
“I’ll bet.”
“Damn, I’d like to get a look in that garage.”
“It would be bad if he saw you. And it’s not like we can’t check to see what’s registered to his parents.”
He grumbled but finally reached for the gear shift and backed the car out of the long driveway. “You can do it now, if you want, or wait until we get back to the station.”
“He could have brought her here.” Rebecca couldn’t tear her gaze from the house. “Driven right into the garage.” She swallowed. “She could still be there.”
“Where’s the brother?”
“Tim’s brother? Um, Seattle, I think Tim said. Evan went to the U of O and must have graduated this spring. I’m pretty sure they were three years apart. Anyway, Tim said he got involved with a girl who is from Seattle, and he followed her there.”
“It might be interesting to talk to this Evan. Get his take on his brother.”
“Should I try?” That came out sounding timid. She cleared her throat. “I mean, what if he turns right around and tells Tim I was asking about him?”
“So what? I’m pretty sure he has the idea you might be just a little suspicious of him.”
“The thing that bothered me most was when he said I won’t know whether anyone hurt Mandy until I find her.” Bothered? It had given her the creeps. “He almost seemed to think that was funny.
